Dear Neighbors,

Today, as we come together to celebrate Juneteenth, we honor a profound and pivotal moment in our nation’s history. On June 19, 1865, when word of emancipation finally reached the remaining enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, it marked a definitive step toward the promise of true freedom.

As your Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, I believe it is vital to recognize that Juneteenth is not just a reflection on the past, but a reminder of our collective responsibility to the present and the future. While I recognize that I view this day through a different lived experience, please know that I stand in complete solidarity with you in celebrating Black history, resilience, and joy.

Our community thrives because of its deep roots, vibrant culture, and the unwavering strength of its residents. True progress requires more than just celebrating freedom on paper; it demands that we actively work together every day to ensure equity, accountability, and justice in our schools, our neighborhoods, and our city services.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve you, to learn from you, and to work alongside you. Today, let us celebrate how far we have come, while remaining steadfastly committed to the work that still lies ahead.
