COMMUNITY MEMORIAL MARKING THREE YEARS UNSOLVED: FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS CALL FOR JUSTICE IN THE MURDER OF BRANDON GANT
WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Sunday, September 6, 2026, family members, community advocates, and neighbors will gather at the intersection of 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue SE to mark the third anniversary of the unsolved murder of Brandon Gant. On September 6, 2023, at approximately 3:29 AM, Brandon Gant was fatally shot at the intersection of 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue SE. Three years later, the suspects responsible remain at large, and the homicide investigation being conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) remains open and unsolved.
The connection between community leadership and the grieving family began as an act of volunteer service. Once strangers, Commissioner Tom Donohue and the Gant family bonded after Donohue offered to capture video and photography of Brandon’s funeral services three years ago. Donohue has remained alongside the Gant family from day one in their ongoing search for accountability and closure.
“This tragic murder occurred in my Single Member District before I was elected as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner. But as a neighbor and photographer who stood with the Gant family during their darkest moments, it is a daily reminder of why we cannot stop fighting for justice,” said ANC Commissioner Tom Donohue (8A01). “Three years is far too long for a family to sit with unanswered questions. Someone in our city holds the key to bringing peace to this family, and we urge anyone with information to step forward. I believe someone in our neighborhood knows something, it must be eating at them"
The memorial service will feature a solemn dove release by the Gant family to honor Brandon’s life and signify their enduring hope for justice. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch seek the public’s assistance in locating a vehicle in reference to a homicide that occurred in Southeast.
On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at approximately 3:29 a.m., members of the Sixth District responded to the intersection of 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue, Southeast, for report of sounds of gunshots and a vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male shooting victim inside of a vehicle. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was admitted with life-threatening injuries. On Friday, September 8, 2023, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The decedent has been identified as 23-year-old Brandon Gant of Southeast, DC. The suspect’s vehicle was captured by a surveillance camera and can been seen in this video: https://youtu.be/Xl7EUWNPK-o
The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
