ANC 8A Commission

Welcome to Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8A

Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) are a unique and vital body of the Washington, D.C. local government. Established by the D.C. Home Rule Act of 1973, ANCs ensure that grassroots community perspectives directly shape citywide policies, local developments, and agency decisions.Commission 8A proudly serves the residents of Ward 8, bringing neighborhood voices directly to the desks of the Mayor, the D.C. Council, and District government agencies.

🏛️ The Legal Power of "Great Weight"

While ANCs are advisory bodies, D.C. law grants them significant legislative leverage. By law, District agencies cannot simply ignore a Commission's recommendations. What is "Great Weight"?Under D.C. Code, city agencies, boards, and commissions must give "Great Weight" to the written recommendations of an ANC. This means government officials are legally required to review, acknowledge, and provide an explicit, detailed written rationale if they choose to disagree with a formal ANC resolution. This ensures our neighborhood has a powerful, legally backed seat at the table regarding liquor licenses, zoning variances, public safety plans, and street infrastructure designs.
